Homelessness in Western New York has reached a record high, with a 2026 Point-in-Time count by the Homeless Alliance of Western New York identifying 2,188 people experiencing homelessness, a 24% increase from 2025. This is the highest number recorded since tracking began in 2005, driven by evictions, job loss, and domestic violence across Erie, Niagara, Orleans, Genesee, and Wyoming counties. The United Way of Greater Niagara presented its annual Caring Cup Award to the employees of General Motors Lockport and the United Auto Workers Union. Buffalo Police Commissioner Erika Shields made her first public appearance Thursday since taking office May 4, announcing new changes to leadership at the Buffalo Police Department.Retired State Supreme Court Justice, and former assistant District Attorney, Timothy Drury is urging Erie County not to settle one of the "Buffalo 5" verdicts that are currently under appeal. Sabres Captain Rasmus Dahlin has been named a finalist for the James Norris Memorial Trophy, awarded to the NHL's best defenseman. He joins Jim Schoenfeld as the franchise’s only finalists for the award.
